John 16:17-18
Some of his disciples said to one another, "what does he mean by saying, 'in a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'because I am going to the Father'?" the kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying."
Questions, troubles, doubt, worries, anxiety and concern. The disciples had been with Jesus for three years. They understood that he was the promised Messiah, but his speaking confused and concerned them. In a little bit you won't see me, and then you will see me, I am going to the Father.
They were perplexed by this saying, and wanted to know the true meaning of Christ's words. But instead of asking Christ himself they asked each other.
Isn't this how I am? Always missing the true meaning of the passion of Christ, emptying himself and giving all glory to the Father, and raising me to this same life from the dead. Always asking, what do these things mean, what is their significance? Always searching, never applying.
This is why I always need the clear teaching of Christ, showing me what to believe, living and demonstrating how I should live. The power of the gospel and the cross is one that should transform me into the likeness of Jesus Christ, pushing me to give my whole life to the glory of the Father.
What as the disciple questions and concerns then? Where is Jesus going and when will he return? The answer to this question is given to the disciples. He tells them that he is going to die, for he tells them that he will then come back and turn this grief into joy. Why? Because the death and resurrection of Christ will bring salvation. The joy is worth the pain, just like a birth.
So the disciples have been told again that Christ will give them ultimate joy. Is he my ultimate joy? Is my sorrow turned to joy?
Oh Lord, let me see the glory of Christ and let me make you my ultimate joy and my ultimate hope. Gracious Lord, let me give all of my life for your glory. In Christ, amen.
