Who needs glasses?

This brief meditation is on ultimate reality as is found in the gospel of John chapter 1. It seeks to answer the question of whether there is a lens, or glasses, by which all of reality is to be viewed, or should each person view it with their own eyes or view?

The first thing to ponder is how everyone is always searching for ultimate meaning. The haunting question of everyone is: why am I here? What is my purpose? How do I fit in with everyone else in this world? What is the truth? What am I here for?

The questions go on and on. Why is it that we as people ask these questions? Well, a surface answer would be that meaning and purpose in life are things that would make life worth living. If life is full of pain and suffering and difficulty, then what is the point to it. If I have to suffer, than there must be a good reason for it all.

The answer to this question is quite simply this: reality is not defined by self, not defined by suffering, or lack thereof, not defined by a paycheck, or even how successful you are with our family. In fact, I would go so far as to say that success is not even defined by how well you meet the standard of the law. Or even how loving you are to people who are in need.

Success is not the measure of who you are. The measure of who you are is determined by your relationship with the one who made you. Are you walking in step with the creator? Do you know the creator on a personal level? Could you recognize Jesus if you saw him?

So how then do we get back to the glasses, and who needs them? Well, everyone needs glasses, none of us can see the world rightly, or see what the truth really is. Truth is not defined by each one of us individual, truth is a person, not a path. Truth is Jesus Christ. In so much as we view the world, and all that is in it, we must view it clearly. We must see it as it really isms, not as we think it is.

Imagine that you are born, with vision that is not clear. All you can see is about 5 feet in front of you and no farther. Imagine that there are no such things as glasses, and that there is a 5 foot fence around everything in the world. No one else can see any better than you, and here you sit. The question becomes, though you can see, can you ever really see properly. You may think that this is the norm, but is it really. This is all you know.

The reality is that this is the way it is for all of us. No one in their own power and sight can see things the way they really are. This is why Immanuel, God with us, had to come, Jesus Christ. He was the only one since Adam that could see things properly, he came to be our glasses. He came to show us that we have purpose and meaning and value.

The world defines your value by what you do, but Jesus defines your value quite differently. Jesus tells you that your value is immense, because he came to die for you. He tells you your purpose, which is to worship him, give him the honor, and in so doing find true joy. After all, Jesus said that he came to make our joy full.

You see, when the world defines you, it defines you temporally and not eternally, which makes sense, because all it knows is the temporal. But God defines you eternally, with how things are in reality and how things will always be.

So the next time that you are tempted to define yourself in terms of how you are doing, or what you are doing, think again. Put the glasses on and see that you are not defined by such things, and your value is not derived by such hinge, but your value and worth are derived from Jesus Christ who valued you so much that he would even die for you. Yes, he values himself perfectly, and because he values himself, he values you too.

So Jesus is the life and the light of men. Why? Because he gives us life that allows us to function in the way we were designed, to find our full value, and he is the light, because if we view all reality through the lenses of Christ, then we will be able to see things clearly, and instead of foggy pictures that have as much meaning as abstract art to a blind man, we will have 20/20 vision and see things as they were created and designed. Then we will see the amazing details of creation and of all events as they seek to exalt God, and because he is the greatest, bringing us joy, because this is happening.

May God receive all the glory and praise! Amen!
